Canadiens Fall to Kraken, Montour Gets First Hat Trick
The Montreal Canadiens suffered a 5-3 defeat against the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday night, despite a historic performance by defenseman Joel Edmundson. Edmundson recorded his first career hat trick, but it wasn't enough to overcome a strong Kraken offense.
Kraken Dominate Early
Seattle came out flying in the first period, generating several scoring chances and putting pressure on the Canadiens' defense. The Kraken opened the scoring at 11:28, with Jordan Eberle tipping a shot from the point past Samuel Montembeault.
The Canadiens struggled to generate any sustained offensive pressure in the first period, and Seattle doubled their lead just over two minutes later. Jared McCann received a pass from Matty Beniers and fired a shot past Montembeault, extending the Kraken's lead to 2-0.
Edmundson's Historic Night
The second period saw a shift in momentum, with the Canadiens coming out with renewed energy. Edmundson started the scoring for Montreal at 4:41, putting a shot past Philipp Grubauer from the point. This goal sparked the Canadiens, who started to create more offensive chances.
However, the Kraken answered back shortly after, with Vince Dunn scoring a power-play goal to restore their two-goal lead. It looked like Seattle was going to take control of the game again, but Edmundson had other plans. Just over a minute later, he scored his second goal of the game, cutting the Kraken's lead to 3-2.
Edmundson wasn't done yet. He completed his hat trick with a power-play goal at 14:48, tying the game at 3-3. This was a historic moment for Edmundson, as he became the first Canadiens defenseman to score a hat trick since Doug Harvey in 1956.
Kraken Take Control in the Third Period
The third period started with both teams looking to take control of the game. The Kraken regained the lead at 6:39, when Oliver Bjorkstrand tipped a shot from the point past Montembeault.
The Canadiens desperately tried to tie the game in the final minutes, but the Kraken's defense held strong. Eberle added an empty-net goal with 37 seconds remaining, sealing the 5-3 victory for Seattle.
Looking Ahead
Despite the loss, the Canadiens will take some positives from this game. Edmundson's historic performance showcased his offensive potential, and the team showed resilience after falling behind early. However, the Canadiens need to find more consistency in their offensive production and tighten up their defensive play if they want to start winning more games.
The Canadiens will have a chance to bounce back on Saturday night when they host the Dallas Stars.
