Windsor: "McLaren-beslissing was vreemd"
Max Verstappen's victory in the Belgian Grand Prix was overshadowed by the controversial decision to hand McLaren a penalty after the race. The penalty, which cost the team a podium finish, has led to widespread criticism, including from former Formula 1 driver Jan Lammers, who believes the decision was "vreemd".
"I found it very strange," said Lammers, referring to the penalty awarded to McLaren for a technical infringement on their car's rear wing. "I don't know what they were thinking at the FIA. You could see it clearly during the race. If you see a car moving like that, it is quite obvious that something is not right. But it was never mentioned during the race."
The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) initially allowed the cars to compete despite the technical infringement. Only after the race, after the stewards reviewed the incident, did they impose the penalty, which ultimately relegated Lando Norris to fourth place.
Lammers, a seasoned commentator and former F1 driver, expressed his confusion about the timing of the penalty. "They didn't say anything during the race. I found that strange. It was quite obvious that something wasn't right, but they let the race continue."
This unexpected decision has sparked debate within the F1 community. Many believe the penalty was unjust and should have been addressed during the race. The controversy surrounding this incident further highlights the growing tension between the FIA and the teams, with questions about the consistency and clarity of race regulations being raised.
The decision has certainly added a twist to the already captivating Formula 1 season. Only time will tell how this incident will affect the championship standings and the future of the sport.
